The solar sails are effective systems for researching our solar system. The high-power laser system can send the swarm of probes outside the solar system and even to other solar systems. In that, the most extreme version of that project. There would be made a chain of ultra-powerful lasers in the solar system.

And then those lasers would give a punch for the solar sail when it travels through that point. The lasers can be fusion-powered systems that are basing Tokamak-reactor. The laser would install in the middle of the donut-shaped reactor. And then the radiation of that reactor would conduct to the laser element. There is the possibility to increase the power of the lasers by shooting electrons. Or some ions inside the laser rays. Those particles will increase the energy of the laser rays.

The solar sail that is sent to the journey would not be one craft. That system might be a swarm of miniaturized probes that are connected with the membrane. Those probes can be separated at the right distance. The thing is that this kind of system must be very large.

Because the energy load that those lasers are given is very high. In the missions to the outer side of the solar system or even to other solar systems the solar sail would use the outcoming energy as long as possible. The energy can transmit to that solar sail by using coherent radio waves. Or the system can use laser rays that are targeted to the large membrane. That is covered by using a thin silicon layer. That layer can use to create electricity for the solar sail.

That thing minimizes the energy load that hits the solar sail. So the solar sail would be a group of probes that are acting as an entirety. The solar sails are one of the versions of the interstellar and interplanetary probes. The thing is that there are many variants to this construction that benefits the solar wind for traveling in the solar system.

The solar sail could be a multipurpose tool. The sail is a very large structure. And there is the possibility to use that kind of thing as a spaceborne radio telescope. The large lightweight structure can be used also as a large-size radar. And the components that are installed in that thing can use also CCD cameras. The thing is that the same kind of structures that are suitable for the solar sails are also suitable for large-size orbital radars. The ultra-thin membrane acts as the radio telescope or radar. Can use as a communication antenna in the solar sails. But it can also use as a recon system that is orbiting Earth.

Fictional travel to Alpha Centauri by using laser boosted solar sail

In this text, I would think about fictional space trip to Alpha Centauri by using solar sails, what are boosted with laser or microwave beams. The use of lasers with solar sails would give very much improvements to that system. The problems with laser-systems are that the material of the targeted spacecraft would be heated in extreme temperature, but when we are thinking about the use of lasers as the improve the thrust of that very large sail, we must think this problem practically.

Big size of solar sails would allow that the heat of the laser rays would circulate in the larger area, and that would help to decrease the heat, what powerful lasers would send to the target.  Those lasers, what would be used in that kind of program, might be kilometers long, and they might be stationed near the Earth. Making those kilometers long free-electron lasers or powerful masers is a quite simple thing.

There must send many small satellites to space, and then those satellites must be connected together. In this case, those satellites would be equipped with the particle accelerator, what goes thru each satellite and then those satellites would be made very powerful ray, that can be targeted to the solar sail. In this case, the solar sail would be covered with ice, and that ice is no need to be made by water. Then the laser-ray would steam that ice, and that would improve the speed and thrust of the solar sail. This is the good thing to pump the energy for the spacecraft, that would send to Alpha Centauri in some day in future.  The use of lasers or masers would allow using the power source of the spacecraft with smaller power, and that would increase the system lifetime.

When we are thinking about the structure of that solar sail, we might think, that there would be very many small units in this probe, and it would look like some jewels are connected with the same spiders net and the miniaturization and multiplication of that system would improve the solar sails ability to survive that mission. And when this solar sai comes near Alpha Centauri, it would turn sideways to the star, and then increase the layer, what would face the solar wind of that star.  This would help it to transfer it to the orbital trajectory of that star.

And then it could send thousands of pea-sized miniature probes to the planets of that star. That would seem like science fiction, but using miniaturized probes that kind of mission would be done, and the destruction of one particle, would not destroy all probes, and this hypothetical mission would be accomplished surer than with one single probe.  There is only one problem with that system, those massive lasers can be mentioned as the military technology. And that would cause the resistance against this kind of projects.

Is this the solar sail-type spacecraft or optical illusion (Fata morgana)?

Kimmo Huosionmaa

Here is one picture, where is a strange formation in the sky. I see there a square, but it could also be some kind of optical trick. I have thought that maybe this strange square is actually solar sail experiment. But there is also more explanations, and who knows about this. Maybe it is the visitor from another star, who knows, and I had the opportunity to see it from the ground.

And it can also be some optical trick. The equilateral square is very unusual form in the sky, and I must take a picture of it. The form can be caused by some kind of tests of communication systems, or it can be made on purpose, and there is one reason, what might be the reason for creating that kind of form to the sky. This could be the test of some communication lasers and for those systems must the clouds cut away from the radiation.

Or this form can be caused by very large Mylar layer, what is used in the huge sails, what is planned to use for the traveling in our solar system. This kind of huge sails would use the particle flow, what is called a solar wind to accelerate the probes in the space. Those sails are extremely huge, but very thin material, and their width is probably only a couple of atoms. That kind of structures can cause this kind of squares to the skies. But there could be many good explanations for that thing, and one is an optical illusion.
