Have you seen the movie named Christie? There was a car in memory that sheet metals could fix the limited damages. The name of those materials is "memory metal". The easiest way to make material that can fix the limited damage like dents and small holes is to connect small nanomachines to the flexible wires.
The system looks a little bit like a pearl necklace but the form of pearls looks like boxes. Those miniature boxes are connected by using the spring-shaped nano-wire. When something impacts the structure that spring will stretch. And when electricity is connected to that spring it would turn shorter.
Those nanomachines could have small-size rods that can lock themselves to a certain form. When something impacts that kind of material, the flexible wire keeps those nano-structures together. And then the system will conduct electricity to that material. And it makes the spring-looking wire turn shorter and those crystals can connect and form the entirety.
