Genetically engineered silkworms are creating silk that is 70% stronger than spider silk.





The hybridization of animals and other natural creatures can make it possible to create fundamental materials. Researchers created silk that is 70% stronger than spider silk by connecting silkworm's and spider's genomes. That thing can make it possible to create new and more effective protective materials than ever before. 

Using cell cultures or bacteria where that genome is transferred can create a large mass of that extra-strong silk. And that silk can use in parachutes and even breaking wires that can stop aircraft on aircraft carriers. Also, that strong silk can be used everywhere. There is a need for lightweight, flexible and strong materials. 

The bulletproof vests and long but lightweight ropes are good places where that kinds of materials can be suitable. But if that material can produce enough. It's possible to use that super silk between the outer and inner core of the new armor in helicopters, aircraft, and even ships. Super silk can also revolutionize textile production. 

But then we can think about genetic engineering and the ability to create cotton or hemp genome connected to the spider's and silkworm's genome. That thing allows creating the new type of fiber, stronger than steel. If that kind of material is used in textiles that make them fundamental. 

There are always risks in genetic engineering. The risk is that the genome will slip at the wrong point that thing can create poisonous silkworms-hybrid that can be dangerous to humans.
